The entire idea of a car with no steering wheel annoys the heck out of me. What happens when it gets stuck in the snow? Wait until spring? What happens when you need to load it onto a truck? Xbox controller? Yeah, these things are solvable, but they’re also solvable without having to spend millions of dollars - just fit it with a steering wheel. Seriously, Tesla. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! At what point do they no longer allow driver intervention?

What happens when you’re wearing gloves or need to type really fast? Sure, you can solve that with enough engineering, but what’s wrong with a physical keyboard on a phone?
What happens when your car battery is dead? Sure, you can solve that with enough engineering, but what’s wrong with a hand- crank start?
I’m not arguing in favor of taking away the steering wheel, but good grief give the hatred a break. Companies are always thinking about different ways to do things. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don’t.

A steering wheels won’t help a tech bro get himself out of a snowbank.
I think removing steering wheels from vehicles is a good way to remove morons from out gene pool.

At some point, yes. The steering wheel and our interaction in going places will be drastically lessened. At this point, we’re really not there.

Meh. If I ever have the kind of soul-sucki ng commute that so many others do, I’ll be dreaming of the day I can catch some Z’s, play guitar, learn a laungauge, etc. While being driven in my Tesla.

I just hope it doesn’t catch on. A Mazda with no steering wheel would be uber sad.

Here’s an idea. A joystick in the center console. This should be standard for autonomous override.

It’s a bad idea mmmk?
Transportation like this very much focused on high density urban environments, but you know what? Lots of people live and hour from the nearest city and this shit wont work in rural areas. Ever

A Camry with no steering wheel, on the other hand, would be an improve ment in most cases.

We rag on the Camry a lot, but after having one for a rental - I kind of get it. It drives a lot better than we think it does. Similar to Tesla, the problem is more the buyer than it is the car.

Yup, the Camry’s actually a pretty decent car. I’ll pick one in a rental park over most equivalent beigemobiles. That’s part of why it’s ubiquitous. The thing is it’s got nothing which attracts people who like cars and nothing which repels those who don’t. Hence the user base. Who should be the first to lose their steering wheels, and who won’t care when they do.

You need a lyft in life.

I think when we have cars without steering wheels, there will probably be the ability for someone from a driver pool to take over remotely in the rare circumstance where the car gets into a situation it can’t handle. Which is good. You don’t want an unlicensed or drunk occupant taking over, nor do you want a sleeping occupant accidentally activating the controls.

The hell is wrong with you?

It won’t work in rural environments but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t make a vehicle that does work in high density urban environments.

I think a grounding cable and a tow-hook solve all the problems. Especially in the first few years, when last-gen tow-truck guy just grappling-hooks the hell out of every ‘robot car’ he encounters.
*Note to self: patent a winch cable with integrated grounding wire and clamp.

Then you could play Mario Kart when you don't need to steer!

Simple, you just have to activate the Manual Steering Column:
